BASKETBALL

YESTERDAY’S GAMES. The senior and intermediate matches of the Wednesday t competition were played yesterday on the Southend courts in good weather. The teams, under the excellent conditions, played up to standard and some good basketball was witnessed. The following are the results:— SENIOR. KIWI (10) v. PIRATES (6). This was an interesting game and was very even, especially in the first half. Neither team seemed to have the advantage, and when the half-time whistle blew, the score was ’Kiwi (2), Pirates (1). Pirates scored the first goal in the second half, but from the throw up, the ’Kiwi players obtained the ball and K. Jones (Kiwi) scored two goals in quick succession. Pirates then secured the ball and play returned to their shooting third,‘where P. Garth scored an excellent goal, almost from the side line. Play returned to the Kiwi goal, but no ecore was made, and the Pirates defence players securing, passed the ball to the centres. After some quick passing the ball was sent to Pirates goal and F. Todd scored. Pirates (4), Kiwi (4). Pirates again obtained the ball at the centre and A. Jones scored. This was followed by a goal for Kiwi by K. Mitchell. Pirates (5) Kiwi (5).

For some time the ball was passed from goal to goal with no further score, until I. Dempster obtaining passed to R. Reid, who passed to K. Mitchell. A score resulted. From the centre the ball returned again to the Kiwi goal, K. Jones scoring Kiwi (7), Pirates (5). I. Dempster secured the ball at the centre and passed to E. Dempster. From this player the ball went to R. Reid, who passed to K. Mitchell who scored.

Kiwi obtained the ball and passed to the goal, but Pirates were granted an unguarded throw and the ball was returned to Pirates goal. The shoots, however, failed to score and the ball returned to the Kiwi goal. K. Jones scoring from a pass from D. Bryan. Kiwi (9), Pirates (5).

I. Dempster obtained the ball from the throw up, but L. Lawrence intercepted and passed to Pirates goal. The shoots attempted to score, but the ball went out of play. ’Kiwi defence players obtained the ball and passed to the centre. Pirates were given an unguarded throw in the centre third, and D. Roberts passed to P. Garth, who attempted a goal. She was unsuccessful but A. Jones obtained the ball and passed again to P. Garth, who this time scored. Kiwi (9), Pirates (6). I Dempster again obtained the ball, and again L. Lawrence intercepted, and passed to Pirates goal. There was no score, and the ball returned to the centre Kiwi obtained the ball from a throw in, in this third and passed to their goal. A. Roberts (Pirates) obtained the ball and passed to the centre, but I. Dempster intercepted and passed back to Kiwi goal, where the final score was made just as the whistle blew. Kiwi (10), Pirates (6). RATA (11) v. MAKAREWA (9). A good display of basketball was given in this match which was the most interesting played during the afternoon. Makarewa obtained the ball at the centre and N. Beer scored from the first throw up. Play remained for some time in the centre third until D. Dennis (Makarewal passed to M. Wright, who scored. D. Dennis secured the ball at the centre but M. Royds intervened and passed to Rata goal. Makarewa defence players saved a goal and the ball returned to their goal. Ijlata defence intervened and passed to the centre. M. Royds secured and passed to goal but the ball went out. Mrs Mortimer in Makarewa defence passed to R. Spencer, who passed to D. Dennis. From this player the ball went to N. Beer and M. Wright who scored, Makarewa (3>, Rata (0). Play returned to the Makarewa goal, but K. Todd (Rata) intervened and passed to M. Royds. From this player the ball went to S. Murdoch and M. Rodger, who scored. M. Wright then scored another goal for Makarewa. Play returned to the Rata goal, but Mrs Mortimer intervened and passed to the centre. G. Kensington (Rata) obtained the ball and passed to M. Royds who passed to M. Rodger. This player passed to R. Murdoch who scored, Makarewa (4), Rata (2). Both teams made several attempts at goal, until M. Wright securing, scored again for Makarewa. Play was transferred to the Rata goal, but the shoot failed to score. From D. Dennis in the centre, the ball was sent to L. Ward and M. Wright. P. Kidston (Rata) intervened, but N. Beer secured and scored just before half time.

In the second half Makarewa obtained but M. Royds intervened and passed to S. Murdoch who passed to M. Rodger. A .score resulted. Play returned to Makarewa goal, and N. Beer scored. Makarewa (8), Rata (3). Immediately afterwards S. Murdoch scored for Rata. Play remained at the Rata goal until Makarewa defence obtained the ball and passed to the centre. M. Wright scored from a pass from D. Dennis. R. Murdoch next scored for Rata, and shortly afterwards M. Rodger scored again, Makarewa (9), Rata (6). Play returned to the centre and from M. Royds the ball was passed to I. Foster, S. Murdoch and M. Rodger, whose attempt at goal failed. Makarewa obtained from a throwin, but R. Murdoch intercepted a pass and attempted to score. She failed to do so and passed to M. Rod ger, who scored. S. Murdoch scored soon afterwards. The score was then Rata (9), Makarewa (9). Rata scored two more goals before the end of the match. HIGH SCHOOL (15) v. ST. MARY’S (6). As the score indicates, High School had much the better of the game. INTERMEDIATE. COLLEGIATE (8) v. ST. PETER’S (14). This was the most interesting intermediate match that has been played this season, and attracted a great deal of attention both teams having lost one match. Collegiate obtained at the throw up, but M. Holland (St. Peter’s) intervened and the ball was passed to St. Peter’s goal. There was no score. P. Sloan in Collegiate defence third secured, and passed to G. Strathern, who passed to C. Shaw. A. Taylor in St. Peter’s defence third intervened and the ball returned to the centre. A. McAra (St. Peter’s) secured and passed to T. McAra, who scored. Play was transferred to the Collegiate goal and C. Shaw attempted to score, but was unsuccessful. E. Mitchell (St. Peter’s) obtained the ball and passed to O. Holland who passed to E. Smith. No score was made and the ball returned to the centre. G. Strathern obtained and the ball was passed to K. Penny, C. Shaw, C. Smith, R. Jacquiery, and C. Shaw again, who scored. The ball passed from goal to goal until T. McAra obtained and scored. St. Peter’s (2), Collegiate (1). Both teams again made several attempts to score. K. Penny (Collegiate) caught the ball in the centre and passed to C. Shaw, who made an unsuccessful attempt at. goal. R. Jacquiery secured the ball and passed to C. Smith who scored. Play was transferred to St. Peter’s goal, but the Collegiate defence saved and playreturned to the centre. St. Peter’s were given an unguarded throw in their goal third and T. McAra scored. St. Peter’s (3), Collegiate (2). Soon after the halftime whistle blew.

St. Peter’s obtained the ball in the second half and passed to their goal. Collegiate defence intervened and the ball was returned to the centre. St. Peter’s were given an unguarded throw in their goal third but were unsuccessful. G. Strathern (Collegiate) obtained the ball and passed to C. Shaw who scored. T. McAra next scored an unguarded goal for St. Peter’s. G. Strathern obtained the ball in the centre and passed to K. Officer who passed to C. Smith who scored. Collegiate (4), St. Peter’s (4). Play returned

to the St. Peter’s 'goal but no score was made, and the Collegiate defence passed to the centre. C. Shaw then scored two goals in quick succession, Collegiate (6), St. Peter’s (4). E. Smith attempted for St. Peter’s Jsut was unsuccessful. C. Smith scored for Collegiate from a pass from R. Jacquiery. Before the final whistle, another goal had been scored for Collegiate. PROGRESSIVE (2), v. CENTRAL METHODIST (1). The score in this match was not indicative of the play. Progressive were much the better team. Central Methodist have little idea of position and the shoots seemed uncertain of what to do with the ball. ‘KIWI (17) v. PIRATES (5). ’Kiwi had much the better of the game, their passing and shooting being much better than that of their opponents. RATA (16) v. ST. MARY’S (2). Rata shoots were well on their game, and the whole team played much better basketball than they have for some time. St. Mary’s are keeping their positions better, but are still lacking in experience.
