BOXING

ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING AT GORE. (From Our Correspondent.) At a meeting held in the Gore High School last evening it was unanimously decided to form a boxing and gymnastic club, over 50 members being enrolled at the close of the meeting. Mr R. B. Bannerman presided and said that prior to calling the meeting the conveners had discussed the matter at length and had decided that in view of lack of facilities provided for boys leaving school to take up any form of athletics something in the nature of a boxing club was required in Gore. In larger centres public schools had their own gymnasiums and physical culture formed part of the school curriculum. It was perhaps too much to expect that, if formed, the club would be able to build a gymnasium at once, but the committee should work to this end. Unfortunately in Gore there were no forms of athletics which young boys could take up on leaving school and until they qualified for junior football they had no outlet for their activities. Even their football could not absorb them all. It was to provide some means of developing the physique and character of the boys that the proposal to form a boxing club had been made. It was not suggested that instruction should be confined to boxing. Other forms of training could be given. A fund was in existence already in Gore for the establishment of a gymnasium. If the club were formed it might be able to acquire this fund and gradually raise an additional sum to carry the scheme through. Mr A. S. Fleming also stressed the need for giving children leaving school an out let for energy. He foresaw no difficulty in forming a very strong club which would greatly benefit the town. Mr W. L McGoldrick mo\ed that a boxing and gymnastic club be formed. This was seconded by Mr G. F. Mirams and carried unanimously. Mr. D. 8. McKenzie expressed the opinion that gymnastics should form an im port ant feature of the club as this would provide an interest for those too old to join in boxing. Later on when the club became strong it might use its influence to establish the new swimming baths. OFFICERS. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr R. B. Bannerman; vice-presi-dents, Mr A. S. Fleming and Dr. McAra, secretary, Mr G. F. Mirams; treasurer. Mi G. Ross; committee. Messrs A. H. W. Aitken. D. S. Mackenzie. T. Fyfe, E. Selby, W. Packer and the Rev. N. Burgess. The committee was empowered to aptpoint six additional members. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the conveners of the meeting. Messrs Bannerman, Fleming and Dr. McAra.
