RIMU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) So far the climatic conditions have been more or less in our favour. Feed is fairly plentiful and stock are doing well. Farming operations in preparation for the coming season have commenced, many farmers of the district, having their ploughing well in hand. The local factory closed down on Thursday last after a successful season. On Saturday last the local lodge of the Young Helpers’ League conducted their “box opening” in the hall. A number of parents of the children were present, Mrs E. Hargest presiding. Many games were indulged in and musical items were contributed by the following:—Part song by the girls; recitation, Chrissie Peterson; song, junior girls; solo, Miss Ethel Hargest; pianoforte solos, Miss Dawson and Miss Winnie Carswell.

The children are to be congratulated on their splendid contribution of £4 3/s|. Miss ’A. McGovern officiated as secretary. The

president and secretary intend to arrange one or two functions during the year to maintain interest in. the work of the league. W.E.A. On Friday the 15th inst., the first meeting of the W.E.A. and Rimu Debating Club was held in the hall, there being a small attendance. Mr S. August, secretary of the Southland branch of the W.E.A., delivered an interesting lecture on Thomas Hardy O.M. The lectures emphasized the place this great writer has taken in English literature and read many extracts from his writings and poems all of which proved very interesting and instructive. It was decided to hold the meetings weekly. On Friday last the second meeting was held in the school but owing to the inclement weather the attendance was very small. It had been decided that the proceedings take the form of an impromptu debate, with help from town. This was found impracticable and after a short address on Charles Dickens by Mr August, the meeting closed. It is to be hoped the public will take a much greater interest in the Debating Club and that the next meeting will prove more successful. Mr August is a very keen supporter of the club and has promised to bring out many good speakers on subjects that will prove of interest and of value to all. FOOTBALL. The local football team is showing a greater measure of improvement and in many games in which the lads have taken part they have proved themselves in such a way as not to be taken other than seriously. Most of the players are very young w and lacking in experience. Next season however, the team hopes to show as a result of the experience gained this year Against the more seasoned players of the town clubs, to prove worthier contenders for supremacy in the second grade competition.
