ATHLETICS

OLYMPIC GAMES. NEW ZEALAND TEAM’S PROSPECTS. London, June 25. “Everybody is well and training steadily. There has been no heavy work thus far, but we hope to reach the zenith of our form at Amsterdam,” says Mr H. Amos, manager of the New Zealand Olympic team, in summing up the team’s progress. The swimmers and the runners will probably compete in several meetings in London before their departure for Amsterdam on July 26. The athlete, Miss Wilson, ran unplaced in the Middle Club’s Handicap on Saturday, but Mr Amos was not surprised at that as she is not yet in championship condition. Mr Amos is endeavouring to arrange a British athletes’ tour of New Zealand in 1929, but there is no definite announcement at present owing to -financial problems and the difficulty of securing leave. He is also negotiating for a month’s tour of the New Zealanders in South Africa en route home. —Australian Press Association.

KALAUGHER’S INCLUSION. NOT RECOMMENDED BY MANAGER. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 26. Mr A. D. Bayfield, president of the Olympic Council, to-night reported that a cable was received from Mr H. Amos, manager of the Olympic team, stating that the in-; elusion of Kalaugher was not recommended. The organizing secretary’s report showed that £3,667 15/4 had been collected as the result of the recent Olympic appeal. It is expected that the y final amount will be several hundred pounds greater.

The matter of the New Zealand team touring South Africa on its return journey at the South African Association’s expense is to be considered. The chairman considered that more detailed cables should be sent by the manager than had hitherto been sent. It was thought that the public was entitled to know the details.
