FINANCE BILL

COMMONS DEBATE TWO AMENDMENTS DEFEATED EFFECT OF PETROL TAX (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7.35 p.m.) London, June 25. In committee on the Finance Bill Mr Riley’s (Labour) amendment to reduce the tea duty from fourpence to a penny per pound, as the present impost did not help Empire preference, was rejected by 229 votes to 117. Mr. Philip Snowden moved to reduce the petrol tax to a penny per gallon, saying that the tax would fall heaviest on commercial vehicles, would increase the cost of distribution and nullify the benefits of rate relief. Mr Churchill replied tl\at commercial motor cars were virtually subsidized as compared with the railways as they were not bearing the expense of damage done to the roads. The tax burden on industry was much less than the rates. The amendment was negatived by 237 votes to 115.—Australian Press Association —United Service.
