FIVE BY-ELECTIONS PENDING. LITTLE INTEREST DISPLAYED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, June 24. Of five Parliamentary by-elections now pending little interest is being displayed in those taking place in Epsom, Holborn and Hallam (Sheffield), owing to the substantial majorities by which Conservatives have held these seats in the past. In Halifax no election has taken place for many years, Mr J. H. Whitley (Liberal), having secured unopposed his return ever since his appointment hs Speaker of the House of Commons seven years ago. Three candidates are now contesting the seat. There are also three candidates for the Beat at Carmarthen which is rendered xacant by the elevation to the peerage of Lord Melchett, formerly Sir Alfred Mond, who was returned as a Liberal at the last election, but later crossed the floor of the House.—British Official Wireless.
