MORE LIGHT
CURFEW EXTENDED TILL MIDNIGHT. “That the hours of street lighting be extended from 11.30 p.m. to midnight at an increased cost estimated to be £lBO per annum, provision for which has been made in the 1928-29 estimates.” The foregoing is the text of a resolution carried at last evening’s council meeting, which means that in future Invercargill’s streets will be illuminated till midnight instead of 11.30 p.m. as hitherto. The recommendation was introduced by a committee’s report and in speaking to it Councillor Reed said he thought the suggestion was a very good move. He considered that 11.30 p.m. did not give many who were out visiting the chance to return to their homes before the lights were switched off. He would move in the manner of the recommendation. Councillor Macalister opposed the recommendation, stating that he was afraid the Council could not afford the £lBO. He maintained that dances and entertainments were out sufficiently early nowadays to enable those participating to get home before “lights out” at 11.30 p.m. Councillor Tapley supported the motion and said he thought the extra half-hour proposed would be a good thing for the town. A division was taken and the resolution carried. Councillors Macalister, Brodrick, Tattersfield and Cooper voting against it. Councillor Macalister: Curfew is extended.
