MIGRATION SCHEME

EX-NAVAL RATINGS. LAND TRAINING PROPOSED. (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) London, January 25. The Overseas Settlement Committee has enlisted the co-operation of the Ministry of Labour and Admiral Beatty ior the promotion of a migration scheme* embracing exnaval ratings. After the completion of 12 years' service they are usually aged about 35 years and take up vocational training at the establishment already existing at Portsmouth where handy men are turned out. It is now proposed to supplement this with land training. The migration authorities advocate village communities in the dominions in which both the handy men and land trainees settle co-operatively. It is claimed that their physical fitness and adaptability are superior to other migrants. The naval authorities state the desirableness of locating naval men where they would be able to complete their reservist training and qualify for the gratuity of £lOO when 40 in addition to the marriage allowances.—A. and N.Z.
