BALFOUR NOTES. On Saturday afternoon the Riversdale ladies’ hockey team travelled to Balfour to play the local combination. The ground was on the soft side, which hindered fast work. The visitors were much too good for the Balfour ladies, and when time was called the score stood: Riversdale 5 goals, Balfour nil. Mr John McMath with the whistle gave every satisfaction. Afternoon tea was hande'd round, after which Mr J. McCubbin thanked the Balfour ladies for the enjoyable game and the hospitality extended. Mr. J. McMath acknowledged the compliment on behalf of the Balfour ladies. RACING CLUB. On Saturday evening a special meeting of stewards of the Cattle Flat Racing Club was held, about 20 being present. A rough balance-sheet presented by the secretary showed that the result of last year’s working was not so satisfactory as members anticipated. A committee of four was appointed to go fully into the matter and to report to another special meeting on Saturday, July 23. . It is the intention of the club to have a monster euchre party and dance within a few weeks’ time. CAMPBELL CUP. The Campbell Cup, presented by Mr James Campbell, Lumsden, to the Northern District Tennis Association, has arrived at Balfour (the headquarters of the association). The cup is a really beautiful trophy, and will be presented to the Lumsden Club (this year’s winners) at the tennis dance to be held at Lumsden on July 22. GENERAL. At the last meeting of the Balfour School Committee, the secretary was instructed to write the Southland Education Board to see if it is possible to have a hot water service installed at the headmaster’s residence. Various other routine matters were dealt with. In order to keep pace with its everincreasing business a new switchboard, comprising 100 separate numbers, was installed at the local telephone exchange last week. The change-over was effected by Messrs Smiley and Brash, who did their work with no inconvenience to the subscribers.
