BLUFF BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. GENERAL BUSINESS DISCUSSED. The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held last evening. Present —The Mayor, Dr. Torrance (in the chair), Councillors J. S. A. McDougall, W’. B. Dixon, J. Imlay, W. H. Johnston, G. R. George, E. Budd, H. Newman and A. McKillop. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the Southland League (Mr J. S. Dick) applied for the council’s annual grant of £2O to the League.—Grant of £2O made. The secretary of the Southland Motor Association wrote complaining of wandering stock on the Invercargill—Bluff road.— Referred to town clerk and ranger. The hon. secretary of the W.E.A. (Mr S. G. August) applied for the annual grant of £l.—Grant of £1 1/- made. A. Bailey wrote drawing attention to the state of Slaney street giving access to his property. —Left to town clerk to deal with as soon as possible. T. Finnerty, secretary of the Bluff Fire Brigade, wrote asking the council if it could see its way clear to procure a motor chassis as the present reel was weighty and cumbersome. The assembling of the motor would be done at the cost of the brigade.—• Referred- to Fire Brigade Committee. The town clerk reported that slight alterations had been made in the values of the rates by the Valuation Department after the estimates were compiled, the amount of rates now collectable being:—General rate at 6d in the £, £2,386 2/6; sinking fund rate 5-Bd., £249 0/3; loan works rate at 3d, £1,193 1/3; Hospital Board rate at 4jd, £314 2/8; sanitary fees, £959 15/—making a total of £5,102 1/8. * The receipts for June were £BlB 8/8 and the expenditure £938 12/9. The overdraft of the district fund account on July 5 was £741 14/8. Application had been made for the Government subsidy of £lB7 10/- and the council had received £64 13/7 from the Highways Board for maintenance subsidy on the main road from 9/9/’26 to 31/3/’27. The old crusher had been dismantled and he recommended an inspection of the machine by the Quarry Committee. The engine for driving the steam drill started yesterday, so work on the excavation should be expedited considerably.—Received and adopted. The reports of the various borough officials were received and adopted. It was decided to call a special mating of the council next Tuesday to consider the plans of the proposed new town hall. SUMMER TIME BILL. Councillor Newman said the council should support the Summer-Time Bill. This scheme had been adopted in England and he was sure it could be worked with success in New Zealand. He "detailed the benefits which, he said, would accrue. He moved that the council support the Bill when it came before the House. Councillor Imlay seconded the motion. An informal discussion ensued until Councillor George moved an amendment that the debate be deferred until the next meeting to allow of further information being secured. Councillor Dixon seconded the amendment which wag carried.
