MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers at Otautau on Friday, when the following were present: Crs. Buckingham (chairman), Garden, James, Linscott, Blatch, Fowle, Cody, Hopcroft and W. J. A. McGregor. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, wrote regarding railway reserve, Tuatapere, for beautifying purposes, and stating that as no reply had been received from the council regarding same, the papers dealing therewith had been hied.—Received. W. Crowther, Orepuki, asked permission to erect a bowser opposite his premises.— Granted, subject to usual conditions, and during pleasure of council. Frederick Turnbull, Orepuki, petitioned council to apply for a public grant of £lOO to gravel formation on Tail’s Creek road.— Writer to be informed to apply for a grant this year. J. S. Dick, secretary Motor Association, drew attention to the present bad state of road between Longwood and Colac Bay and urged that the very necessary attention be given to this road. —Member and engineer to inspect. Hector Rankin, Fairfax, asked that a few loads of maintenance gravel be put on the road opposite Groper’s Bush siding. He also drew attention to the fact that the river was encroaching on the main road near Brown’s corner. He asked that something be done to protect the road.— Member and engineer to inspect. William Molloy, Gummies Bush, applied for permission to cut flax on Playfair’s and Clark’s road.—Clerk to communicate with Messrs Playfair and Clark. Charles Huggins, secretary Gummies Bush branch of the Farmers' Union, drew attention to the broom growing at the corner of Riverton—Gummies Bush road.—Adjacent owners to be asked to cut broom. William McClymont, Thornbury, drew at. tent ion to the fact that there was no legal pound handy to Waimatuku and Pourakino ridings and as he had to use his paddock for the purpose, he asked that notice be inserted in the papers. —Left in hands of member to look into and report to next meeting. Messrs Bulman and Devanney, Fairfax, made application for permission to cut a tunnel under the road at Ringway siding, for the purpose of laying a tramline to run gravel trucks—Request granted during pleasure of council, work to be done to satisfaction of engineer. Kilkelly Bros., Invercargill, asked permission to erect masts and hauling machinery on the chain road reserve on each bank of the Waiau river for the purpose of hauling logs.—Request granted. N. C. Kensington, Commissioner of Crown Lands, asked if the council had any .objection to the proposal of Kilkelly Bros, to erect aerial machinery for the purpose of hauling logs.—No objection offered by council. J. S. Dick, secretary Motor Association, drew the council’s attention to the dangerous state of two small bridges on the Pukemaori—Merrivale road between Devery’s and the Pukemaori School, and asked that they be repaired.—To be attended to when material is available. T. Smith, Ohai, wrote regarding outfall to Mr W. N. Dover’s section, and asked permission to interview the council regarding same.—Received. Mrs R. Cochrane, Nightcaps, asked when the culvert was going to be put in to give access to her property.—To be informed that council was following the course of other bodies in charging for culverts. James Marshall, Ohai, applied for a culvert to be placed in front of his section, No. 17, Ohai Extension, main Birchwood road.— Matter left in hands of member for riding. E. K. Sim, Pukemaori, asked that a bridge be put over Grassy Creek to his property, “Monterae.”—Held over for further inquiry A copy of the conference of local bodies and Southland members of Parliament was laid on the table. A circular letter was read from the Bruce County Council regarding a conference on main highways, to be held in Dunedin.— Received. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr. J. G. C. Baker, reported as follows:—Since last meeting there has been an unusually dry spell, and, therefore, for this time of the year an unusually large amount of work has been done. The bridge gang has now completed four bridges on the Mossburn —Key section of the Gore — Te Anau main highway, and is now completing the fifth; this leaves one culvert to be completed to finish this road. On completion of this work, it is proposed to repair the second Mararoa stream bridge. Regarding Mr Sheehan’s application for some gravel on his road at Happy Valley, Cr. Gardner inspected and decided to do four chains of gravelling in the coming summer. —Adopted. Hie application of M. O’Brien regarding ploughing roadline on Racing Club’s property was granted. Accounts amounting to £4,091 6/10 were passed for payment. The clerk was directed to write the department asking for a settlement, and it was also resolved that the Public Works Department be written to asking that the money be paid over for Hanley’s road, as the work had been passed by the county engineer A legal opinion was submitted by the solicitors regarding the proposal of the Bayswater residents that the council take over the control of the protective embankments. —Cr. Buckingham moved that the opinion

be referred to those interested. He also stated that a meeting would be called to confer with the deputation which waited on the council at its last meeting. On the motion of Crs. Linscott and Hopcroft it was resolved that the following rates be struck: 1 3-16 d. in Orepuki, IJd in Pourakino, 15-16 d i» Waimatuku, Wairio and Mararoa, Id. in Otautau, 1 7-16 d. in Aparima and Waiau, and 1 3-Bd. in Wairaki Ridges, and a charitable aid rate of 3-16 d. in the £. ORDER PAPER. On the motion of Cr. Hopcroft the following amount was authorised for expenditure in Pourakino riding: Gropers —Thornbury road, maintenance, £BO.
