“BUY BRITISH”

SYDNEY COUNCIL’S ACTION CRITICISED. Sydney, June 15. The British motor car representatives resent the antagonistic attitude of the Labour aidermen. One prominent importer says: “It is a great pity that some of our city aidermen should be the victims of the vicious antiBritish propaganda that is so assiduously prosecuted by foreign manufactures to ‘down’ British trade and get a stranglehold on the British markets.” He continued: “If British cars were purchased in Australia instead of foreign makes it would result in 200,000 of Britain’s 1,000,000 unemployed finding work. In English factories to-day notices are posted up pointing out that Australia is buying English manufactures, and in return that English people should buy Australian products, and they are doing so. It is only right, therefore, that we should do all that lies in our power personally, as well as nationally, to promote reciprocal trade with the Motherland.” When the City Council was discussing recommendations from the Finance Committee that a motor car to be bought for the use of the Lord Mayor, and a typewriter should be of British manufacture, Aiderman Shannon, who said that he was speaking for the Labour Caucus, moved an amendment removing the restriction to British makes. He said that the committee’s recommendation gave undue preference to British manufacturers. He added that there were cheaper cars to be had than those of British make. The amendment was carried.
