TIMARU SMASH
INQUIRY BOARDS FINDINGS. STONE ON LINE CAUSES DERAILMENT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 14. The Prime Minister to-day made public the findings of the Departmental Inquiry Board into the derailment of the Christ-church-Invercargill express near Timaru on June 4. No evidence was found of any defect in the engine or the track which might have contributed to the derailment. The speed of the train was not excessive. On examination, a crushed stone was found on the head of both rails where the leading wheels of the engine first mounted the rail and fragments of a freshly broken stone were found lying on the ballast near by. The Prime Minister feels justified in accepting as the only possible conclusion, the board’s opinion that the derailment was due to a stone having been placed on the lines. He remarked on other cases of stones being placed on the line near to where this occurred.
