BLUFF NOTES

PRESBYTERIAN SOCIAL (From Our Correspondent.) A social gathering of the members of the congregation of the Bluff Presbyterian Church was held in the Willard Hall on Monday evening, the Moderator, the Rev. E. Gardiner, presiding. An extensive programme of musical items, games and competitions, was gone through, and at a suitable interval the chairman referred to the effective services which the student in charge, Mr Robert Griffiths, had given to the church during the recess, the capacity he had disclosed for pastoral work, especially among the young, and voiced the esteem which he had gained among the congregation even during the short time he had been with them. Mr Gardiner said that on behalf of the congregation he wished Mr Griffiths God-speed in his future career, and they hoped they might see him again in Bluff. His remarks were accompaned by a well-lined wallet. Miss Iva Undrill also made a presentation to Mr Griffiths on behalf of the Sunday School and teachers in very suitable terms. The Rev. R. McGregor, on behalf of the congregation of the Methodist Church gave evidence of the good impression which Mr Griffiths had made upon the people, and wished him on their behalf every success and prosperity in his future career. Mr Griffiths, in expressing his thanks for the kind expressions which the speakers had used, and the gifts which had been given, said he had come to Bluff with some degree of misgiving, but that had soon vanished and he had spent a happy time among kindly people. He had been told that Bluff was a hard place to minister in, but he had found people as loyal to Christ as anywhere. The hope of the church was among the young, and he trusted the good work would be carried on among them. He would be pleased if in the ¥ future he were permitted to return to Bluff, and in the meantime wished the congregation every prosperous blessing. GENERAL. On Monday evening Patrick Murphy, a member of the crew of the s.s. Pakeha, went into the Temperance Boardinghouse at Bluff and was served with a meal, after which he refused to pay and struck the proprietor across the mouth. He was arrested and appeared before Messrs W. B. Dixon and A. E. Lea, Justices of the Peace, and was convicted and fined £2. Some years ago the Salvation Army discontinued services at Bluff, but it is stated that services will shortly be resumed, and the Army will occupy the bandroom for that purpose. The Awarua Boating Club sent a number of competitors to the Otago Regatta in Dunedin last Saturday, and they were accompanied by several local enthusiasts. Awarua won the Youths’ Fours, in which they have not been beaten for two years. They also got seconds in the Maiden Fours and the Junior Fours.
