STEWART ISLAND SERVICE
To the Editor. Sir.—ln connection with a recent paragraph in the Times regarding the Stewart Island service, it strikes me very forcibly that the steamer is run simply to suit the convenience of the Harbour Board employees, without any regard for the needs of tourists and visitors. In my own experience over many years this has always been the case. Instead of quibbling over what days the ferry boat should be run during the holidays, why cannot the authorities run the steamer on Christmas Eve (Friday), Christmas Day, and also Boxing Day. The railway services are maintained all through the holidays and we hear of no complaints from the railwaymen. Why should the tug employees enjoy privileges that cause so great an amount of inconvenience to the public? There is no question as to the financial side of the thing.' The trips during the Christmas holidays are always more than well patronised.—l am etc., “HOPEFUL.”
