SAFETY OF LIFTS
POWERS OF INSPECTORS. THE WELLINGTON ACCIDENT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 30. As the result of tl» lift accident here, by which two men ware killed, the Public Service Commissioner has advised the Government that no restrictions whatever are placed upon the inspectors of machinery as to exercising their full statutory authority. The inquest revealed that the reasons that the more recent safety devices had not been insisted on by inspectors in all classes of lifts are that these lifts have been in operation for some years, and have been passed by them as reasonably safe; that inspectors have felt it would be both unreasonable and impracticable to insist all at once on the provision of the latest equipment op every, class and type of lift; and that their efforts have been directed to effecting improvements as quickly and as reasonably as possible.
