DAY LABOUR
SYDNEY FINDS SYSTEM EXPENSIVE. Sydney, October 29. A report submitted to the City Council shows that an alarming increase has taken place in the cost of carrying out council work under the policy of day labour. The removal of spoil from Hyde Park to Moore Park now costs 9/6 per ton, compared with 4/-, the contract price. Contract work will now be reverted to. It is estimated that the cost of laying streets in Sydney with eight inches of concrete is 28/- per square yard, and the same work can be done under award conditions in nearby suburbs from 12/6 to 13/9, according to the class of excavations.—A. & NJZ.
