NEWS AND NOTES. (From Our Correspondent.) The weather has shown a decided improvement during the past few days. Strong winds accompanied by occasional showers were cxjierienced during the week-end and prospects for good weather for the holiday on Monday did not appear to be bright. However, the day was fine, but at time of writing appearances are that the fine spell Is unlikely to continue. The opening of the cricket season took place on Saturday when there was a large attendance of players and s|>ectators. A team from Mossburn journeyed to Lumsden and an enjoyable game was played with a local team, the latter winning by 20 runs on the first innings. Mr C. Belsham, president of the club, thanked the public for their attendance and urged on the members to attend the practices and make full use of the facilities which had been provided for the players this season. After thanking the ladies he declared the season open. A match was played with the Union Club on Labour Day and an enjoyable game was witnessed by a large attendance of spectators. In the first innings Lumsden made 100 runs; J. Ogilvy being top scorer with 39. Union replied with 136 runs. The team travelled to Lumsden by train and returned by the excursion train from Queenstown. Mr Hamilton, on behalf of the Union Club, thanked the home team for the hospitality shown, and stated that an enjoyable day’s outing had been experienced by the visitors. There was a large attendance at the tennis courts on Saturday and a great deal of enthusiasm is being shown among the members. It is hoped to arrange the ladder during the coming week, after which some good contests should be witnessed among the challengers. The competition to be held in the Northern district this, season should encourage players to practise constantly. Mr J. Campbell, a local resident, has signified his intention of presenting a silver cup for the competition amongst the clubs. His offer will come before the meeting of the sub-association on Thursday. The Mossburn club are endeavouring to arrange a match with the Lumsden B team and the game should take place within a week or so. A meeting of the Northern District Rugby Sub-Union was held at Balfour on Tuesday, this being the final meeting of the year. Delegates were present from Waikaia, Riversdale, Mossburn, Balfour and Lumsden, and an apology was received from Mr J. Campbell (Athol). Mr W. Clark (Lumsden), presided. A rough balancesheet was submitted and after the proceeds from country day have been received from the Southland Rugby Union, the finances of the sub-union should be on a good footing. Mr G. Sproat took the opportunity of thanking the president for his services during the past two years, and regretted that this would be the last meeting that Mr Clark would attend as he was leaving the district to commence business on his own account, at Winton. Mr Sproat referred to the manner in which the business had been conducted under (he president’s guidance, and on behalf of the Northern Rugby SubUnion he had pleasure in presenting him with a silver-mounted shaving mirror, which he hoped would remind him of his connections with football in the district and wished him success in his new venture. Other members of the union who spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Clark’s services were Messrs W. Collins (Waikaia), C. Carmody, M. Rasmussen (Balfour), and T. Small (Lumsden). Mr Clark suitably responded and thanked the members for their kind thoughts. He had derived a good deal of pleasure out of his connection with the sub-union and regretted leaving the district. He thanked the members and officials for their hearty support throughout his term of office and wished the sub-union further success. Musical items were given by Messrs Lynch, Crawford and Rasmussen. Several toasts were honoured and the singing of •‘Auld Lang Syne” concluded an enjoyable evening. The visit of the Vice-Regal party on Monday created great interest, and about 200 residents assembled on the platform. The party were welcomed by the chairman and members of the Town Board. Mr F. Keith speaking on behalf of the citizens, expressed pleasure at, the visit, but regretted that the time was so short and hoped that if Lumsden was fortunate enough to be favoured with another visit, his Excellency would have more time at his disposal. After addressing the public school children his Excellency inspected the Masonic Hall and addressed a number of members who were present. A special holiday was granted the school children in honour of the visit. A number of people took advantage of the excursion train to Kingston on Monday and spent the holiday at Queenstown, while about the usual number attended the Gore races. The river was well patronised and a good number of local enthusiasts secured good bags. A meeting of the sports bodies and public was held on Saturday to arrange a farewell social in honour of Mr and Mrs W. Clark. It was decided to hold a euchre party and dance on Friday and a committee was appointed to arrange matters. Mr F. Keith presided and Mr Brash was appointed secretary. The death took place on Saturday of Mr John Campbell at the age of 71 years. The late Mr Campbell was owner of Longridge station for a number of years, where he resided until the time of his death. Deceased did not take an active part in public affairs, but was of a quiet and retiring disposition. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was largely attended, showing the respect in which the deceased person was held. The service w r as conducted by the Rev. J. Johnston. The late Mr Campbell is survived by a widow, a daughter and one son.
