TEMPERANCE UNION
GORE WOMEN’S MEETING. A meeting of the Gore branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held on Wednesday evening was presided over by Mrs T. Rhodes (vice-president). After the opening exercises the branch faced a large volume of business, mainly occupied with a discussion of the various remits to be considered at the District Convention to be held at Invercargill next week. Mesdames G. F. Mirams (corresponding secretary) and D. McAskill (treasurer) were appointed the Gore delegates to the convention, and the hope was expressed that many more members of the branch would find it possible to attend. One of the speakers at the Invercargill meeting will be Mrs T. E. Taylor, Dominion president of the union. Miss Winnie Cullen favoured the meeting with a very acceptable violin solo. Mrs Acutt gave an address on conditions in Britain, expressing the hope that New Zealand would never find itself so firmly in the grip of strong drink as was the Old Land. The next gathering of the branch will be the annual meeting, when a “bring and buy” sale will be held.
