LAND SETTLEMENT

DEPARTMENTAL HEADS CONFER. (Per United Press Association.) Te Kuiti, October 15. The Hon. A. D. McLeod is holding a conference with heads of departments to-day on land questions and co-ordination of action between the valuation, lands, and advances departments. Prior to the conference opening the Minister said he had no doubt that a certain percentage of the land in New Zealand should never have been- opened for settlement. It was useless, however, to throw the responsibility on this or that Govern? meat. The economic position had changed since the land was occupied, and a certain amount of celaning up would have to be done. ‘ # Referring to valuations the Minister said he knew that statements had made it known from time to time that valuations on an unimproved basis were altogether too high; but there were differences of opinion upon that point.
