MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR
SHOOTING INCIDENT NEAR MARTON. BULLET HITS RAILWAY VAN. (Per United Press Association.) Marton, September 3. An extraordinary incident on the railway at Weston Hill, five miles from Marton, on Wednesday afternoon, has just been revealed. A mixed train from Palmerston North to Marton was moving slowly up the hill about 4 p.m. The guard, J. Pickering, heard a shot fired and almost simultaneously the wooden framework above the window of the rear van was splintered. The missle ricochetted against a steel plate near the roof, which was dented.
The guard was sitting only a few inches below. It was evident from the position of the marks on the van that the shot was fired from the top of an embankment. No missle has been found and there is no explanation of the outrage.
