DOMINION FINANCE

EXTERNAL DEPARTMENTS. SIR JOSEPH WARD’S QUERIES. (From Our Special Reporter.) Wellington, June 17. During his election speeches Sir Joseph Ward indicated on more than one occasion that he was in serious disagreement with the financial policy of the Government, particularly in the matter of the External Departments of the Dominion. Evidently Sir Joseph wanted an opportunity to discuss the matter at the earliest possible moment, for when question time came to-day, Sir Joseph gave notice of his intention to ask the following questions of the Minister of Finance—(l) What portion of the surplus mentioned in the GovernorGeneral’s speech of to-day has been paid in reduction of the indebtedness of the Dominion. (2) What would the amount under the sinking fund system in operation before its repeal upon the indebtedness of the Dominion have been in the reduction of the country’s debt. Sir Joseph also gave notice to ask the Minister of Finance what was the position in respect to the amount raised for the payment of the cost of the battle-cruiser H.M.S. New Zealand.
