SOCIAL AT NIGHTCAPS

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a good attendance at the social in the Nightcaps Coronation Hall, which was inaugurated by the Nightcaps Horticultural and Industrial Society for the purpose of presenting the trophies won at the Winter Show’. An apology was received from Mr Adam Hamilton, M.P., who was unable to be present. The chair was occupied by the president, Mr W. Excell. An excellent concert programme, which was much appreciated, was rendered by the following—Songs, Mesdames McLeod and Dyson, Messrs Philp (Riverton), Hodges (Otautau) and Dyson; duets, Mr and Mrs Dyson; and Highland Fling and Sword Dance, Miss Lee. Mrs P. Grant efficiently acted as accompaniste for the singers. Mr D. Sinclair, the secretary, reported that the Show’ would show a profit on the year’s operations, and took the opportunity to thank the donors of the special prizes, exhibitors, adversers, and assistant officers, who hacr all contributed to the success of the Show. In making the presentations, Revs. Boyd and Dyson made appropriate comments, and asked the following to step forward and receive the trophies—Mrs Excell, the Southland Coal Owners’ Cup for most points in the Show; and also the McKinnon Cup for best kept garden ; Mr F. J. Collie (Otautau), McKinnon Memorial Cup for most points in Horticulture and Agriculture; Mrs J. Casey (Opio) for most points in Produce, Fruit and Seeds; Mr Milne, Southland Coal Owners’ Challenge Cup for the Nightcaps School, for most points in school work; Mr J. Sheehan, McGill silver cup, for best Game bird. The presentation of Mr F. Boyle’s gold medal to Mr J. Clapp for most points in Poultry was entrusted to Mr H. E. Philp. After cheers had been given, and “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” sung, suitable responses were made by the recipients. Supper and dancing terminated a very pleasant evening.
