CORONATION LIBRARY

ANNUAL REPORT. WORK OF THE YEAR. The following is the annual report of the Gore Coronation Library Committee for the year ended March 31, 1926: During the past year the institution has fulfilled its object of providing reading material and general information to the people of Gore and district.. The number of visitors to the reading room for the year was 50,423. The number of books issued totalled 29,893. The number of subscribers now on the roll of the library amounts to 340, of which 123 are new members. The members’ subscriptions for the year came to £221 10s. The number of books of fiction purchased during the year was 351, while under the Anderson bequest the sum of £7 8s 6d was expended in procuring new books. There is still a considerable sum to the credit of the Peter Anderson trust. The total amount in the Savings Bank at interest is £225 8s sd. Since the books were closed for the year further purchases have been made by the bequest. It is anticipated that during the coming year a large number of new books will be obtainable under this bequest. It has been of very great assistance in raising the library as regards its general standard and efficiency as a public institution. Your committee very deeply regrets to have to record the death of the active and painstaking secretary of the library, Mr George Matheson. Mr. Matheson was a man who always took a very keen interest in the library affairs in his capacity as honorary secretary, never sparing hcmself in assisting to make the library as efficient as such an institution should be. His death has proved a great blow to the institution, and his place will be a hard one to fill. At the annual meeting the subscribers to the library will have the privilege of electing three members to the committee and the Borough Council elects three, the Mayor being ex officio chairman. The committee specially desires to thank Messrs Harr aw ay, Anderson and P. A. Keir for gifts of flowers to the institution. BALANCE SHEET.
