Except in potatoes there is practically nothing being sold in the local market, and even tubers themselves have eased off during the past few days, having dropped to the extent, of about 10/- a ton. Thus potatoes which were worth £7 per ton last week for June delivery are now quoted at about £6 10/-, and for June-July about £7 5/-. For July-August-September delivery, however, the price quoted is £7 10/-, but there is difficulty in doing business at that figure. No stuff is being sold for export to Sydney and it is reported that merchants there are doing business between themselves. Farmers are not showing any inclination to sell at present, being content to keep their potatoes in anticipation of a further rise in the near future. There is no change in the market so far as oats are concerned. Chaff is inquired for at late rates, but are quiet. GRAIN REPORT. Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, report as under:— Oats: The business passing is by no means great and the market is, if anything, easier. Bright, heavy lines suitable for seeds excepted. There are more undergrade oats than usual held in store, and these lines are practically unsaleable. We quote:—A. Gartons 3/3; B Gartons 3/- on trucks, country stations, sacks extra. Chaff: The local demand is principally for prime quality but the bulk of consignments arriving on the market do not reach the good bright standard, consequently lower grade chaff is inclined to accumulate in store. We quote: Good bright chaff £6, ex truck; medium to £4 10/-; inferior from £3. Sacks extra in each case. Potatoes: The market has firmed again and consignments are being sold at prices ranging from £6 to £6 10/-, ex truck, Dunedin, sacks in. Several farmers are storing in anticipation of better values in the spring. Wheat: Odd samples are still coming to hand but the threshing must now be nearly finished. The best lines are being taken by millers at prices up to 7/- per bushel, on truck. Fowl wheat is in plentiful supply and is realising from 6/- to 6/5 on trucks, according to quality. * GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORT. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, Dunedin, report as follows: Oats:—The market still remains quiet. A few samples are coming forward, the majority of which show signs of weather and will not pass .as A or B grade. Grade oats are being inquired for, but undergrades are difficult to quit. The importation of oats from overseas is seriously affecting the local market. We quote: A Gartons 3/3, B Gartons 3/- per bushel, on trucks. Wheat.—There is not a great deal of milling wheat offering, but a few small lines are being disposed of at from 6/9 to 7/per bushel, on trucks, country stations. Fowl wheat is in plentiful supply, the greater proportion of the Southern wheat coming forward being out of condition. Merchants are not showing much interest in this as they are fairly big holders. Sales of good whole fowl wheat are being made at from 6/- to 6/5 per bushel, on trucks, country stations. Potatoes. —During the week potatoes have advanced on last week’s prices. This has been due to the Canterbury market showing an advance, due to inquiries from Sydney. This market is very uncertain at present, it being difficult to forcast accurately the future. Good tables are realising from £6 to £6 10/- per ton, ex truck, sacks in. Chaff: The quantity coming forward is not sufficient to meet the demand, with the result that prices remain firm. Local feeders are readily buying all the good bright heavy oaten sheaf chaff ex truck, as it comes to hand. Practically no shipping in this line has been done, as the North Island can obtain their supplies cheaper from Blenheim and Australia. Prime oaten sheaf £5 15/- to £6; inferior and medium £3 to £4 10/- per ton, sacks extra. FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES.
