FIVE KILLED
SHOCKING CROSSING SMASH. TRAIN HITS MOTOR CAR. Adelaide, May 1. A shocking accident occurred at Cheltenham railway crossing when five occupants of a motor car were killed. When the car was approaching the crossing it was raining hard and all the curtains were closed. As the crossing gates were open the car was driven confidently ahead. When it reached the middle down line a train from Adelaide to Port Adelaide crashed into it. There were three women and two men in the car. All the bodies were mangled beyond recognition and the names have not yet been definitely ascertained. They are thought to be all members of the Caire family of Port Adelaide.—A. & N.Z. WHERE WAS THE CROSSINGKEEPER? (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 2.. The victims of the Cheltenham level crossing smash were: John Caire, Mrs Bertha Caire (wife of the former), John Caire, Clifton Caire, Mrs Clifton Caire and Iverna Caire. The police failed to find the gatekeeper after the smash. They consider that the bodies are so mangled that he might be one of them. The fact that the gates were open indicates that, he was on duty shortly before the crash. The enginedriver and fireman state that neither saw the car till they were 10 yards from it, but it was then too late to avert an accident. They applied the brakes and pulled up in 50 yards. Tfie engine and the two following cars were derailed.—A. and N.Z.
