VALUABLE ASSISTANCE
WAR PENSIONS APPEAL BOARD. IMPORTANT WORK. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, April 29. One of the most important phases of the work of the Returned Soldiers” Association is in connection with the War Pensions Appeal Board. The practical value of this work was stressed at the annual meeting of the Auckland Association. It was stated, however, that returned soldiers who had to appear before the board had apparently, to a large extent, not realised the value of the assistance offered by the association. The value of the assistance offered was shown by the following figures—September, 21 cases assisted, 14 appeals upheld, 3 appeals adjourned, 4 appeals dismissed; December, 20 cases assisted, 12 appeals upheld, 1 appeal adjourned, 7 appeals dismissed. The president, Mr 8. Austin Carr, stated that in a large number of T.B. cases pensions were now being granted. Previously it had been held that pensions would not be granted in cases where the disease had been contracted before or after war service, even when accentuated as the result of that service.
