ASIATICS
VIGOROUS DISCUSSION IN AUCKLAND. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, Apr. 30. “Not cabbages and Kings,” but “cabbages and Chinese,” formed the theme of a vigor ous discussion at the annual meeting of the Auckland Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last evening. The White New Zealand League sought the support of the association for its aims and objects. Mr Pascoe said he thought this was a matter which the Returned Soldiers’ Associations should support regarding Chinese. Newspaper correspondents had written that if the Asiatics were excluded the price of vegetables would be greatly increased. He quoted the example of Liverpool which had reduced its Chinese population of 2500 before the war to 500 to-day. In conclusion, Mr Pascoe moved that the remit be forwarded to the Dominion conference of the Returned Soldiers’ Association expressing alarm at the number of Chinese entering the Dominion and urging the Government to close the avenues of entry.
In seconding, Mr A. C. A. Sexton, expressed the view that the Minister should be “gingered up” to enforcing the recent restrictions upon the influx of Chinese. The motion was carried unanimously.
