A NARROW ESCAPE

MOTOR CYCLE RUNS AMOK. WOMAN AND CHILD INJURED. (Per United rress Association.) Waihi, April 6. An exciting runaway occurred on the Waihi beach on Sunday in which a woman and child had a narrow escape from being killed. Robert Mitchell, a Public Works employee, was proceeding on a motor cycle from the main beach road on to the sand when the back wheel struck a large stone, the impact jolting the back lever out. Immediately the cycle swerved, reared up on the back wheel, and dashed with terrific speed in the direction of a group of holiday makers. Seeing the vehicle had run amok the crowd scattered in all directions. However, a married woman, Mrs J. J. Fox, was knocked down, and the one-year-old daughter of Claud Capper met a similar fate. The latter’s life was saved by the rider throwing the machine on its side just before the impact occurred. Mitchell was pinned beneath the machine and Buffered severe injuries to his foot. The injuries to all parties were attended to by a doctor who happened to be on beach.
