SEAMEN’S UNION
THE REGISTRATION PROPOSALS. Sydney, Mar. 18. Referring to the proposal of the Federated Seamen’s Union to apply for reregistration, Mr Walsh, explaining the reason for the change of policy, said it was realised unionists had gained much-improved wages and working conditions by the use of the Arbitration Court. He said the Seamen’s Union had not sought re-regis-tration, but the shipowners and their friends had clamoured for it with the result that; when application was made the Seamen’s Union did not feel justified in involving itself in prolonged and costly legal action so had not opposed the action. The general secretary, Mr Raeburn, said the statement that the credit balance was 3/6 was an error, as this figure appeared in the balance sheet only as cash-in-hand. The actual credit was £479, and the total assets of the Union amounted to £3114. A. <fc N.Z.
