RIFLE SHOOTING

TRENTHAM MEETING FINE WEATHER CONTINUES treNtham aggregate won by ROOTS. (Per United Press Association.) Trantham, March 18. To-day saw solid progress made with the rifle meeting, the management making most of the fine weather prevailing, indeed it was unusually fine and uncomfortably warm and the marksman’s bane, the mirage, was painfully evident all day except when at rare intervals a slight light breeze came along and drove it off only to re-appear presently more tantalisingly than ever. The shooting, however, despite the mirage was very hot throughout and some fine totals were recorded as an inspection of the prize-lists will disclose. Two matches were completed, the Wellington, ten shots each at 500 and 600 yards and the Taranaki ten shots at 800 yards. In addition one range (the 600 yards fifteen shots) of the Dominion match was fired and the second leg (ten at 900 yards) will be taken to-morrow morning. To-day’s shooting at 600 yards completes the ranges counting for the Trenthani Aggregate which falls to Roots with 432 pointe. He takes the B.S.A. medal and the shield. It is notable that Anderson, last year’s belt winner, who also carried off this match with a total of 414, is only three points behind that tally to-day and stands 35th on the list. Last year 397 got into the prize money. To-day it took 410 to creep in. The tie between the Wellington and Greytown teams in the champion service teams match was decided to-day, Hunt (Suburbs) and H/Feast (Greytown), firing five shots at the tiles. Hunt won by 15 points to 5. Suburbs thus carry off the Islington Cup. The prize-list is as follows: — Trentham Aggregate (all scores at 300, 500 and 600yds) : £5 and B.S.A. gold medal and shield—Roots, Patea, 432; £4 Simmonds, Wanganui, 426; £3 A.
