GOVERNMENT GRANT

REPLY TO REPRESENTATIONS. Mr J. R. Hamilton, M.P. for Wallace, has received the following letter from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. G. Coates) with reference to the granting of a subsidy towards the metalling of Collinson’s road. “In further reply to your two telegrams of 25th ultimo, in which you urge the provision of a Government subsidy to enable Collinson’s road through the Grove Bu.b soldiers’ settlement to be metalled before next winter, I have now to inform you that, as a result of your representations, full investigations regarding this matter have been made, and I understand the estimated cost of the work required on Collinson’s road amounts to £4OO. The Southland County Council is prepared to contribute £lOO, and it is considered that the Government could reasonably provide an amount of £2OO, which would represent a £ for £ subsidy on the full amount of £4OO. It is further considered that in view of the undoubted benefits to be gained by the settlers from the improvement to this road they could reasonably be expected to contribute the remaining £lOO required in the form of increased loading on their sections. If, therefore, the settlers will agree to such a proposal to provide the sum of £lOO and will convey their agreement to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, my department s £2OO £ for £, together with a further £lOO representing this increased loading, will immediately be issued to the Southland County Council, "which body could proceed with the metalling of the road to the extent of £4OO as soon as its proposals, covering such work, have received the approval of my department in the usual manner.”
