A NONAGENARIAN

FUNCTION AT GLENCOE. (From Our Correspondent.) An interesting function took place on March 12 at the house of Mr A. McKay, Glencoe, when a large company assembled to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mrs William Sutton. The company included two old friends of Mrs Sutton—Mrs McDonald, Glencoe, and Mrs McKay, Dunsdale —who settled in this district over 60 years ago. Mr and Mrs Sutton came from Ireland 40 years ago, took up land an 3 carried on farming successfully. They had four of a family—Mr George Sutton (Glencoe), Mr Joseph Sutton (Winton), Mrs A. McKay (Glencoe), and Mr William Sutton, who during the Great War made the supreme sacrifice. The late Mr Sutton was held in the highest respect as a man of strict integrity and sterling worth, and after his death five and a half years ago Mrs Sutton came to reside with her daughter, Mrs A. McKay, at Glencoe. Mrs Sutton is still vigorous, enjoys good health, and is able to take practical interest in all that concerns the welfare of this district. Mrs Frank Allen, Dunsdale, in a few wellchosen words, voiced the feeling of the meeting, when she spoke of the welcome Mrs Sutton extended to all friends who took time to visit her, and the pleasure it had been to her to talk over various matters of interest with her at intervals. Nurse Scott (Mataura) paid a high tribute to Mrs Sutton for her kind and cheerful disposition under all circumstances. Mr Swale (Mataura) spoke of the pleasure it had always been to visit Mr and Mrs Sutton after they retired and came to reside at Mataura. The Rev. R. B. Hill also referred to the great influence Mrs Sutton had exerted in all matters of religion by her personal example and all speakers expressed the wish that Mrs Sutton would hpve many happy returns of her birthday.

Mrs Sutton was made the recipient of many presents.
