SOUTHLAND PIPE BAND

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland was held in the Band Room, Liddel street, last evening, there being 26 members present. The chair was occupied by Mr Geo. Taylor. Mr J. L. McG. Watson wrote regretting that a prior engagement would prevent him attending, and expressed his thanks on behalf of the (St. Andrew’s Society for the splendid help which the Band had rendered during the year. ANNUAL REPORT. The Committee presented the following report for the year ending March 31: — ..“During the year the Band has had a Very strenuous time, there being a total of 74 parades, which included public concerts, St. Andrew’s Scottish Society, Lome Farm, Summer Show, Battalion band concerts and Carnivals, Victorian 1 cncketers, Civic Pictures, Australian athletes, Lord Jellicoe’s visit and weekly practice. The Band members have to be congratulated on the way they have attended these parades, there being an average of 14 members present at each parade and on one occasion there were- as many as 21, which is a 'record. We hope the Band will be able to eclipse that record in a very short time. Pipe Major Clark and Piper H. Henderson share, the honours for attendance, both having 73 parades to their credit. They set an example which some of the Band would do well to follow. The Band have twice during the last year commenced training for contests, one at Balclutha and one at Invercargill, but owing to unforseen I circumstances these have had to be aban- ! doned. ; “The Band is in a very satisfactory position and, under the musical direction of Piper Clark, has attained a very high standard of Drum Major Duncan resigned the position and is now in the ranks as a piper, C. McLean taking his place as Drum Major. “The financial position of the Band is very strong, there being a credit balance of £2Ol 12/9, which is an increase of | £76 0/2 over last year. At a meeting held J on March 2, it was decided to procure a complete set of new uniforms and the “work of raising the necessary funds was taken in hand immediately. To set the ball roll- | ing Messrs H. and J. Smith generously j donated the price of one complete uniform, I and the thanks of the Band are due to i them for their splendid offer. With about I £5OO to collect for new uniforms and the Dunedin Contest in sight, it can be readily : seen that the Band has a strenuous year ; before them. If every member does his best, however, there is no reason why we should not get the required sum for uniforms as well as try hard to come out on top at the Dunedin Exhibition Contest.” The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report arid balance-sheet, complimented the Band on the success of the past year’s operations, and expressed the opinion that the prospect for the ensuing year were particularly bright. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted without further discussion. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following office-bearers were elected for the coming year:— President: Mr G. Taylor (re-elected). Vice-Presidents: Messrs R. D. Donaldson, J. H. Smith, J. Flaws, W. Park, A. McLeod, E. McLyon, J. MacDonald, T. M. Rankin, J. L. McG. Watson, A. Sutherland, A. McGregor. Pipe Major: Mr W.
