DAIRYING INDUSTRY

WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP. AUCKLAND, May 7. For the first time in the history of the dairying industry the world’s championship butter competition is to be held in New Zealand. The competition is promoted by the Auckland Winter Exhibition, which is organised by the A. and P. Association and the Provincial Industrial Association. Prize money totalling £lOO is offered, the first prize being £5O, the second £2O and the third £2O. In addition, gold medals go to the first three placed. Entries do not close until July 20, but already the promoters have received a very gratifying response to their enterprising offer. The entries to date number fifty-five, many being from overseas. Of this number twenty are from Australia, including the States of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasj mania. There is an entry from Denmark which can be depended upon to be of high , grade. The central States of U.S.A., Min- ! nesota, Wisconsin and lowa, are competing, and two entries from Fiji have been received. Advice has also been received that Esthonia will be a competitor, and Canada is also expected to enter. Auckland having thrown the guage to the buter producers of the world has placed the Dominion producers on their mettle. , The challenge has been accepted, and the result lies, not on the knees of the gods, but in the hands of the Dominion’s suppliers and manufacturers. Needless to state, the overseas entrants are not competing for the i value of the money prize. New Zealand has I earned an enviable reputation for its pro- , ducts in the world markets. Danish butter ' maintains its ascendancy in Britain largely ! owing to old association, and the fact that i it has a highly organised and well-establish-led method of distribution. Australia is bidI ding strongly for a place in the sun of the dairy world, and her intention to challenge J the Dominion in scientific production is evidenced by the numerical strength of the , Commonwealth entries. Denmark, America ; and Esthonia will be welcomed as com- ! peters, and although the competition is essentially friendly, it may be fraught with tremendously important issues.
