AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRIES.
IN A LANGUISHING CONDITION
(By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE. April 29. Mr Guv Smith (Associate-President oi the Chamber of Manufacturers), referring to the fear of the Federal Government not giving effect to the recommendations of the Tariff Board and grant increased protection Io certain industries, said the woollen industry was in a deplorable state, and unless something was done for the engineering trade some firms would have to close. In addition to these, the match industry, paper and cardboard industries and rubber trade were anxiously awaiting a revision of the tariff. The toy industry, which promised great things, was nearing its death knell. Surplus stocks of Britain and Germany had been dumped into Australia, and to-day Germany practically controlled the toy trade, the Commonwealth output having fallen 65 per cent.
