THE RADIO INVASION
THEATRE PROPRIETORS ALARMED. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) NEW YORK, January 27. (Received January 27 at 11.30 p.m.) Convinced that the radio theatre and the phonograph are in a battle that may mean the destruction of one or more of them, an organisation of all elements, comprising the American theatre, to consider the encroachment of radio, and to safeguard the stage as a national institution, was provided for in a resolution adopted at a conference of the Actors’ Equity Association. Mr William Brady, producer and manager, declared that radio was rapidly eliminating the legitimate and musical comedy stage, and that the theatres were playing to 40 per cent reduced receipts as a result of the radio invasion.
