WYNDHAM TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. (From our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wyndham Welfare League was held in the Board Room, Wyndham, on Monday, evening, those present being:—Mr G. J. C. Smart (President) in the chair, Messrs C. E. Davey (secretary), D. N. Raymond, E. Sherbourne, A. T. Heydon, A. T. Ross and W. J. Marsh. Arising out of the minutes, the matter of a town rest room was discussed, and it was decided on the motion of Messrs Sherbourne and Ross that Dr Baird, Messrs Raymond and Golding be a sub-Committee and report to the next meeting of the League. A letter was received from the Otago High School giving details of areas of endowment lands held by the Board, as requested in the letter earlier forwarded by the League. The President said that he considered the League should keep to some scheme of activity through the winter months. Hon G. J. Anderson in his remarks at the opening of the new grandstand on New Years Day had mentioned that he would like to see a suitable memorial erected to Hon Dr Menzies, who had done so much to ensure the success of sport in Wyndham. He (the speaker) thought that the League could well take up such a worthy object, and with the support of the sports bodies and general public which would be forthcoming, would be able to bring the suggestion to effect. Mr Davey (secretary) thought that the support of the sports bodies should in particular be brought into the movement, as they could greatly assist with any work required. Mr Smart moved that two representatives from each sports club, from the Farmers’ Union. Town Board and from the graziers be asked to attend the next meeting of the League on February s 23, for the purpose of considering the erection of a suitable memorial to Dr J. A. R. Menzies. Seconded by Mr Heydon. An amendment by Mr Davey to leave out the graziers was defeated, after which the motion was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the next meeting when considering the memorial that a carnival be held during the winter months for the purpose of raising funds for the erection of a memorial to the memory of Dr Menzies. The President remarked that he had noticed that the trees planted by the League were in need of water seeing that the season had so far been very dry. On the motion of Mr Raymond it was decided to approach the nearby s residents and ask them to supply a little water to the trees now and then. On the motion of Mr Smart it was decided to extend the thanks of the League to those who had performed at the League’s concert held during the Camp. Mr Marsh gave some information on the report of the recent Railway Commission, showing how the branch lines had been viewed by the members of the Commission. Messrs Smart, Marsh and Davey were appointed as a deputation to wait on the | Hon G. J. Anderson on his next stay in the electorate. Mr Smart informed the meeting that the Wyndham Anglers’ Club had organised a big fishing day for next Wednesday to secure a good number of trout, for the purpose of having a photograph taken by a local photographer to exhibit at the South Seas Exhibition. He thought that if the League could secure any good scenic photographs of local scenery, they with the other photographs would be a very good advertisement to the district. It was decided to help in this direction on the motion of Messrs Sherbourne and Ross.
