GORE NEWS

A BUDGET OF ITEMS. (From our Correspondent.) Welcome rain fell at Gore on Sunday, but unfortunately there was hardly enough of it to do much good. Only .11 of an inch of rain was recorded at Gore between 8 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Monday. The Gore fire-bell rang shortly before 9 o’clock on Saturday evening, and the brigade turned out smartly. The engine headed up Broughton Street, but it was soon evident that the blaze was some distance from the town. A scrub fire at Croydon Bush was the cause of the alarm, and the individual who called out the brigade apparently was a bad judge of distance The brigade was back at the Fire Station in a few minutes. Considerable inconvenience was caused in Gore through the electric supply failing shortly after 9.30 p.m. on Saturday. It is understood that the trouble was caused through a break-down at the works at Mataura. The “juice” was off for some hours, and householders had to fall back upon candles and oil-lamps again. Miss Nellie Bramley and Company, playing in “Fair and Warmer” at the Princess Theatre, were probably the chief sufferers. The light failed just at the commencement of the second act, but the company contrived to carry on with the aid of candles, and motor-car headlights shining through an exit door. Something in the nature of a re-shuffle is going on among the retail shops of Gore at present. Mr G. Peterson’s new threestorey building is now practically completed, and Mr Peterson is at present engaged in shifting his stock into it. Mr W. Tutty will also occupy a portion of the new building at an early date. Messrs Lewis’s Ltd, have taken over the premises in Main Street, lately occupied by Mr J. B. Calder, and are vacating their Mersey Street premises. The Federal building will shortly be divided into two shops, one of which will be occupied by Messrs Steel Bros., and the other by Mr H. H. F. Grant. The building at present occupied by Steel Bros and Mr Peterson is the property of H. and J. Smith Ltd., and it is understood that this firm intends to commence extensive rebuilding operations as soon as the shops are unoccupied.
