BRAVE AND PROMPT

YOUTH’S LIFE SAVED. (Per United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, January 26. Prompt action by two members of the Blenheim Rowing Club resulted in the saving of the life of a lad, Noel Reid, who was in danger of drowning in the Opawa River on Saturday afternoon. Reid and another lad, J. Thoms, were out in a canvas canoe when it upset. Thoms could swim, and made for the bank, but Reid was left struggling. Cyril Hadfield and Alfred Gridlay had had a swim after a row, and were going to dress in the rowing shed when they heard cries for help. They plunged into the river, swam across to the opposite bank, and ran over 120yds to the scene of the mishap. Hadfield saw Reid sink for the last time, and, diving in, swam under the water and seized him. Helped by Grindley, he got Reid ashore, and artificial respiratory methods were successful in restoring life.
