CROYDON AIR DISASTER
FORMAL INVESTIGATION OPENED. EVIDENCE OF PETROL BLOCKAGE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 23. The formal investigation of the Croydon air disaster, which was ordered by the Secretary of Air, opened this morning. The Court was crowded. Sir Arthur Colefax (Solicitor-General), presided. Mr Trevor Watson, for the Air Minister, stated that the wrecked aeroplane was officially re-certificated on November 18 after the test flight. Evidence would be called to show that the machine was not overloaded. It had been inspected by a certified ground engineer on the morning before the flight, also by the dead pilot (Captain Stewart), who was a man of quite exceptional skill and capability. An examination of the wrecked machine showed that the petrol pipe was blocked or partially blocked.
