NORTH INVERCARGILL
MORE ABOUT THE HALL. ARCHITECT SUES FOR FEES. For some time now little has been heard of the North Invercargill Public Hall, an atmosphere of unwonted quiet apparently having enveloped that locality, but the affairs of the Hall Committee once more saw the light of day yesterday when, in the Magistrate’s Court, Shardlow and Lightbody, architects, claimed from the North Invercargill Public Hall Society the sum of £B7 15/-, alleged to be due for advice, services, plans and specifications. Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M., was on the Bench, while Mr G. McDonald appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr B. Hewat represented the defendant society. William Shardlow, architect, in evidence stated that he had been approached by the old Committee regarding the drawing of plans, and he prepared sketch plans. I*ater he was asked to go to a meeting, where a resolution was passed authorising witness to draw more elaborate plans. Afterwards they went back to the original plan and added a porch, for which witness did a plan. Then he heard nothing more until Mr Crawford asked him how much the Committee owed him. He told Mr Crawford the fees according to the scale, telling him he could not take a smaller fee. Later the Committee had several other changes made in the plans, and in September they wrote to witness to say that they were not going to carry on. They sent him £15.15/-, which they wished him to accept in full payment. Corroborative evidence was given by Norman Lightbody, a partner of the previous witness. Evidence was called by both parties bearing on the statement made by plaintiff in his evidence, after which his Worship stated that he would consider the case fully later, reserving his judgment.
