A. & P. ASSOCIATION

SOUTHLAND EXECUTIVE. A RECORD SUMMER SHOW. The monthly meeting of the Directors of the Southland A. & P. Association was held yesterday, there being present: —Messrs James King (chair), J. Fleming, J. Milne, G. S. Edie, A. Horne, W. F. Scandrett, A. Gerrard, R. J. Anderson, J. Gilkison, A. S. Holmes. W. Clark, A. Anderson, A. Weir and J. Young. A rough balance-sheet of the Summer Show was presented by the Secretary, showing a credit for £692. The Secretary reported that this was easily a record for the Association, being an increase in profit of £143 over the previous show’, which was up to that time the best experienced by the Association. CORRESPONDENCE. On behalf of the Trustees of the late T. L. Barnhill, Mr W. Roxburgh handed back the Barnhill trophy, with a request that it be used as a special prize in the natural Romney section. Two judges, John Miller and A. Hunter, wrote thanking the Association for the pleasant time spent while in Southland. It was decided to number the show paddocks and allot them to breeders, the work to be done by a special committee. SHOW IMPROVEMENTS. A special committee, consisting of Messrs R. J. Anderson, A. Holmes and J. Fleming, was appointed to supervise the penning of the sheep, and to allot space. It was decided to hold the fat stock sale at the Summer Show on the Tuesday afternoon instead of Wednesday. A letter was received from Mr J. M. Watson stating that some of the stewards had not turned up, and some exhibitors had received no assistance in penning their stock.—lt was decided to refer Mr Watson’s letter to the committee for the appointment of stewards. CATTLE ACCOMMODATION. The cattle accommodation was reported by. the secretary to have been absolutely inadequate, and all the horse pens on the western side had to be used to house the cattle. Even then the yearlings of the lighter breeds had to be double banked. The chairman said the time had arrived when they would have to extend the cattle accommodation, especially in view of the Royal Show. Mr A. Weir said they should consider the erection of a stock pavilion. A small building could be erected and added to as finance would permit. « A committee of three, Messrs. J. Miller, G. S. Edie and J. Fleming, was appointed to allot the pens, and the Grounds committee instructed to report on further cattle accommodation. GATE ARRANGEMENTS. The gate steward, Mr W. Taylor, wrote suggesting various small improvements at the main gate, which would assist the gate stewards during the rush of traffic. —It was decided to thank Mr Taylor for his suggestions, and also for the work he had performed as gate steward. The report stated that the increasing motor traffic had made the gate conditions vastly different from a few years ago; and he suggested that the whole entrance scheme be revised. It was decided to hand the gate problem to a special committee, which would take into consideration the Fox street gate as a motor entrance. VARIOUS. With regard to the counting of points for special prizes it was decided to ask the Secretary to prepare a special report on the classes which should be counted in making up the “most points” total. The prize money of Miss D. Mow at amounting to £75, was held up on account of her horses being put into boxes without authority, and the numbers torn down. Miss Mowat replied that permission had been given her to use the loose boxes, but she knew nothing of the torn numbers. —It was decided to fine Miss Mowat £1 for a breach of rules, the amount to be deducted from her prize money. It was decided to give the Clydesdale Society’s medal to the winning 2-year-old filly (Mr R. Kennedy). It was decided to give the Poultry Club the use of the Artillery Hall for their annual show, which was to be held during Winter Show week.
