FURTHEST SOUTH GATHERING. The Otara Sports were held yesterday afternoon in Messrs Blair's paddock in good weather. There were some two or three hundred people present, and the gate takings amounted to £22. The running and field events were keenly contested, and a young runner, A. Fraser, ran particuarly well in the sprints, winning the Sheffield by a good margin, with the Pahia runner, J. Murphy, second. Later in the day Murphy had some consolation for his Sheffield defeat by winning the long jump and hop, step and jump. Perhaps the best race of the day was the quarter, which the Invercargill athlete, J. Holloway, won in rather brilliant style from scratch after a close tussle with J. Morton. Results are as follows: 100 Yards Handicip, £4 5/-. Second 17/6; third 7/6.—First heat—A. Fraser (syds) 1; A. McEwan (2yds) 2. Five starters. Won by two yards. Time, 10 3-ssecs. Second heat—J. W. In a good finish, Morton forged ahead of McLauchlan and won by five yards, Chisholm close up. Time, 2min 10 secs. 220 Yards Handicap, of £3. Second 15/-; third 5/-.—H. Willcocks (6yds) 1; D. McLauchlan (scr) 2; A. Fraser (16yds) 3. Eight starters. Willcocks was always well placed throughout, and went on to win comfortably by four yards, Fraser a yard further back. No time was taken. Quarter-Mile Handicap, of £3 2/6. Second 15/-; third 7/6.—J. Holloway (scr) 1; W. J. Morton (14yds) 2; H. Willcocks (syds) 3. Only starters. Morton set a hot pace and Holloway had to go all out to catch him. A ding-dong tussle ensued coming into the straight and, in a fine finish, Holloway won by a bare yard. Time, 56secs.

Stuck was well up in front throughout and had a good lead entering the straight. Chisholm chased him hard, but could not catch him, and Stuck won easily by 10 yards. Time, smin 8 l-ssecs.
