SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Forbcry Park T.C. acceptances clote this evening. Tokomri-Fortroee Hack R.C. entries are due to-night. Wellington R.C. meeting will be concluded on Saturday. Dunedin Cup meeting weighte are due on Monday next. Red Wink may be a runner in the Dunedin Cup race. Acceptances for Takapuna J.C. Summer fixture close to-night. Wellington’s new grandstand will “seat” fully 9000 people. Consolation Handicap, £7OO (IJm.) will create interest to-morrow. Gisborne Racing Club Summer handicaps are to appear to-morrow. Harry Audubon may be favoured in the Dunedin Cup (trotting) race. Michaela and her Archery colt foal are under offer at 1000 guineas. Dissertation (6.10) is to be sent from Hastings to contest Takapuna Cup. Hie Australian pacer, Billy Sea, is reported to have cost his N.Z. owner £l5OO. The two-year-old Star Stranger, raced at Trentbam, is reported promising. Age and a spell may have improved steeplechaser Carawock, now in work again. A special horse train for trotters will leave Christchurch on Tuesday for Forbury Park meeting. Christchurch Press says that Gold Light did not go down as freely as usual prior to Wellington Cup. It is reported from Trentham that Listening Post was chopped back last at the start of Telegraph Handicap. W. J. Tomkinson has reached Dunedin with Pearlie Chimes, Adair and the trotters Napland and Kean John. Canterbury-owned Flaming Ray was galloping on well at the end of the Ruapehu Handicap race on Tuesday. Oreum, by King John—Desert Gold, ran well at Trentham on Tuesday and may win a two-year-old event in the near future. St. Amans, sire of Oakleigh, Peter Amans and other jumpers and some gallopers, has been purchased by a Wellington owner.

It is stated that the Hon Mr Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, was greatly impressed with Forbury Park and its up-to-date appointments.

It is reported from Canterbury that Palestrina will be retired to the stud at the close of the current season. She ranks as a good, but very unreliable galloper.

The winner of the Foxton Cup, £4OO dim.) turned up in the favoured mare Irapuka, by Our King—lranui, by Soult— Taukei, by Castor—Vivandiere, by Musket, a good old-time pedigree.

The successful Wellington-owned filly, Degage. injured her mouth when playing with the chain in her box. and is not likely to be seen carrying Mr E. B. Simpson’s colours for some time to come.

Commenting on the race for the Wellington Cup “The Rook” writes in Christchurch Press: —“Limelight was ridden a bad race, but Musketoon and Deucalion did well, and given a softer course before the meeting closes, they will be hard to beat.”

Next month the Egmont Racing Club will distribute £4455 in stakes, including a Cup Make of £BOO. The Taranaki Jockey Club, not to be out-done, distributes £4675, while the Taranaki Cup is worth £9OO (including a gold cup valued at £100). With £9130 offered in stakes at the two meetings the Taranaki racing carnival should attract an unusually larger number of outside horses.

When Rangimoana won the Ruapehu Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday she returned a huge dividend and ranked as seventeenth selection, while she was also coupled with Solfraid, who represented another stable altogether. The Wellington R.C.’s totalisator is a twenty-four horse machine and twenty-seven horses started, necessitating several contestants being coupled.

Hipo has been a paying proposition for his owner-trainer E. George, for apart from winning the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday, he has placed several other valuable races to his credit, among them being an Easter Handicap and Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie. The Australian sportsman who made inquiries about Hipo recently will probably regret not having taken him at the 2000 guineas asked. The success of Hipo at Trentham is possessed of more than passing interest for Southland breeders, as he is out of a mare called High Jinks, who in turn ranks as a sister to the stallion Some Boy 11, now owned and located on Mr A. Chisholm s property at Otautau. Some Boy H, by the way, is reported to be leaving some very promising foals in the Western district and this is not surprising, as he is a well-bred horse and proved himself a galloper above the average when racing in New South Wales and Maoriland.

Commenting on the prospects of the weight-for age races at Randwick in the autumn the Australasian says:—Beauford is getting on in years, but he has always been very carefully nursed and has never been over-raced, and this fact will, no doubt, help his trainer in his endeavour to get the Newcastle champion back to his best form. Another factor in Bev-’iford’s favour is that he was always a light-fleshed gelding, and he does not require a great deal of fast work. He has built up during his long spell, but will never be massive. It is not his disposition to carry a lot of flesh. If Beauford does return to his best —there is always an “if’ when a horse has been out of action for so long—his meeting with The Night Patrol in the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick over a mile in the autumn will be a race that may go down in history. Gloaming has the secret of perennial youth, and, while it is impossible to go on winning for ever, his trainer is so skilful that Gloaming will prove very dangerous to the best of the weight-for age horses. It is unlikely that he will visit Melbourne, but as The Night Patrol is nearly sure to make the trip to Sydney, it is possible that Beauford, Gloaming and the imported horse will meet at Randwick. Lilypond and Spearfelt are other horses that are up to weight-for-age form.

Probably encouraged by their successes against Papyrus a»d Epinard, the Americans have organised an invasion of England, says an English exchange. At least twenty three and four-year-olds deemed to be the best in training in America are to be sent to England as early as possible, and three wellknown American racing men are at present under orders to proceed to Europe to arrange the details of the transport and training of the American equine hopes in Europe. Included in the invading horses will be Sarazen, the conqueror of Epinard, and Zev, who beat Papyrus, and the other challengers will be selected from the leading three-year-old performers of the present season, with some two-year-olds who are wintering well. The following owners have agreed to support the raid by entering horses:—Messrs Julius Fleischman, J. E. Widener, Whitney, Harry Sinclair, Major August Belmont,

and Mrs W. K. Vanderbilt. The invasion of next season is only intended as a preliminary canter. It is hoped to follow it up with more extensive raids the following year, and for that reason there will be more American entries than usual for the classic races in England and France. The Americans are quite certain that they have now some very smart horses in training, and think they can repeat the success that attended their efforts in 1880-81 when, with such horses as Fox all and Iroquois, they caused alarm in England by their remarkable successes. There have been spasmodic American raids ever since, but they have not achieved a spectacular success. It is now believed that the invaders will be better suited in every way by the conditions obtaining. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. SECOND DAY OF SUMMER MEETING. PRINCIPAL EVENT TO SOUTHLAND. COMMENT ON THE RACING. TWO SOUTHERN HORSES SUCCESSFUL ROB RETURNS BIG PRICE. (Special to the Times). WELLINGTON, January 22. The second day of the Wellington R.C. Summer meeting was favoured with fine though dull weather. The track was very fast. The attendance was large and the Governor-General and suite were again present. For the Mungaroa Handicap (l£m.) eight paraded, the order of favouritism being:— Steel Bar (odds on favourite), Bonena, Kalakaua, Hyama, Equitable, Sayonara, Otauru, Lady Waimangu. At the start Equitable was slightly left. Otauru was first to break the line and led out of the straight from Hyama, Kalakaua, Steel Bar and Bonena. Down the back straight Otauru still led Steel Bar and Kalakaua, with Sayonara, Bonena and Lady Waimangu next. At the home turn the order was still unchanged, but immediately afterwards Steel Bar was seen threading his way through the field. At the half distance Bonena, Kalakaua and Steel Bar singled themselves out and, in a desperate finish, Steel Bar prevailed by a bare head from Bonena, who just defeated Kalakaua by the barest possible margin. Sayonara was fourth and Otauru fifth. The January Welter attracted thirteen starters, backers’ preference being as follows:—Tuahine, Fool’s Paradise, Tarleton, Quest, Imperial Spark, Top Score, Kilceit, Martulla, Tresham, Allmarimba, Puketoi, Sir Pam and Pink Rose. From a good start Fool’s Paradise was first to become prominent, with Puketoi, Sir Pam, Kilceit, Tuahine and Quest following. Round the top Fool’s Paradise still led from Puketoi, Sir Pam, Tuahine, Top Score, Tresham and Quest. At the straight entrance Fool’s Paradise kept in command from Puketoi, Tuahine, Top Score, Quest and Tresham. In the straight Quest came through and won easily by a length and a-half from Imperial Spark, Tresham two lengths away third, followed by Fool’s Paradise, Kilceit, Tuahine and Puketoi. Eight faced the barrier for the Nursery Handicap (5f.), the order of favouritism being:—Gold Acre (a hot favourite), Shirley, Victory Bond, Oreum, Adavale, Kaiti, Phantasy and Motion. The first to show out were Gold Acre and Victory Bond and, at the junction of the course proper, Shirley, Adavale and Kaiti were at the leader’s heels. In the straight, however, Gold Acre drew away without an obvious effort, winning hard held by two lengths, Victory Bond defeating Oreum by a head for second place. Adavale was a similar distance away fourth. Ten paraded for the Trial Plate (7f.), the order of choice being:—Sanctuary, Gauntlet, Westbroke, Copper Nob, Pe?ch Brandy, Carnot, Flaming Ray, Lady Gay, Sottano and Daphne Bruce. The first out were Carnot and Flaming Ray, Gauntlet being slow to begin. Round the top turn Westbroke led Flaming Ray, Gauntlet, Carnot, Copper Nob, Lady Gay and Sanctuary. Three furlongs from home Flaming Ray was in the van, Sottano, Westbroke, Sanctuary, Gauntlet and Lady Gay following in that order. At the distance Flaming Ray was still in command from Westbroke, Sottano and Gauntlet. In a good finish Gauntlet proved superior, winning by half a length from Carnot, who finished strongly, and just got up in time to defeat Copper Nob by a head. Westbroke was close up fourth, followed by Sottano, Sanctuary and Lady Gay. Tarleton, who ran in the January Welter, was the only non-acceptor in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap who failed to go to the barrier. A fine start saw the field away in line. Landslide and Suggestion were the first to show out, with Mantua, Cleasanta and Sunart ahead of the rest. At the turn Landslide was still in command, with Mantua, Cleasanta and Sunart in close order, then came Gold Light, Bonetter, Sunart, Deucalion, Listening Post and Pantier. The order was unchanged along the back, except that Deucalion moved up and Listening Post improved his position. Along the top bend Landslide maintained premier position from Mantua, Bonetter, Deucalion, Gold Light, Cleasanta, Sunart, Listening Post and Pan tier. The field bunched at the entrance to the straight and Landslide was soon a back number. Suggestion made a run at the distance, followed by Mantua and Deucalion, but Listening Post, with a fine spurt, wore them down and went on to win by a length from Suggestion, who was hard ridden to beat Mantua by a neck. Then came Deucalion, Sunart, Gold Light, Bonetter, Cleasanta and Landslide.

The order of fancy was:—Gold Light, Landslide, Sunart and Cleasanta (coupled), Suggestion, Listening Post, Deucalion, Bonetter, Mantua and Pantier.

The Douro Cup saw a fine lot of hacks go to the post. The race proved a good thing for Pelham, although, perhaps, the unluckiest horse was Carpentier, who got a bad position all the way. Goldspinner was left a bit at the start and Kilris went to the front from Hallmark, Pelham, Pronto and Bonnie Gold. At the six-furlong post Tinohari shot to the front, followed by Bonnie Gold, Pelham, Jubilance, Hallmark, Pronto and Subjection. The field closed up rounding the bend into the straight and Bonnie Gold was first to turn her head for home, while just behind were Tinohari, Pelham and En Route. Carpentier was prominent at the distance after coming right from the back. Pelham and En Route fought out the finish and the former was three-quarters of a length ahead when the post was reached. En Route was half a length ahead of Carpentier, and behind the latter was Star Ranger, Tinohari and The Tank.

The order of favouritism was: —Pelham, The Tank, Hallmark, Jubilance, Kilris, Carpentier, Tanadees, Quiescent, Clarinda, Lady Joyce, En Route, Star Ranger, Goldspinner, Tinohari, Pronto. Subjection, Vindictive, Ophir and Avonlea.

Listening Post, Master Sandstone and Killocra were scratched for the Metropolitan Handicap, leaving a field of ten. A fair start saw Gaillard, Merit and Grand Knight holding the best positions after the field had settled down, with Orchid most prominent of the rest. Orchid shot through as they reached the straight, but Merit immediately put in a successful challenge and was pever headed again. She won easily by two lengths. Grand Knight and Last Crust, who put in a late run, made a good race for second, the former winning by a neck. Then came Peneus, Gaillard, Orchid, Snatcher, Ilka, with Piiliewinkie last.

The order of favouritism was: —Merit (a little better than evens), Peneus, Gaillard, Snatcher, Last Crust, Ilka, Orchid, Piiliewinkie, Grand Knight, Martian Miss.

The Camp Handicap was a good betting race and, as on the previous day, the outsider of the field romped home. Piquant, Lipsol and Finora got away well and they led the field into the straight. Blonde joined the leaders at the distance, but, just as Piquant looked like holding her own, Rob shot through and beat the favourite by a length. Piquant was a neck ahead of Blonde. Bonnie Nurse was fourth, and Gardenia, Finora, Agitato and Lipsol well up. Rangimoana, who paid a big dividend on the first day, lost her rider (N. Trills). The order of favouritism was: —Piquant, Lipsol, Blonde, Finora, Rangimoana, Agitato, Gardenia, Gamebag, Lady Evalina, Bonnie Nurse and Rob. HANDICAPS FOR SATURDAY. WALLACEVILLE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £3OO. One mile and three furlongs.
