WEST COAST SOUNDS
EXCURSION TRIPS ADVOCATED. SOUTHLAND LEAGUE’S ACTION. The re-establishment of the summer excursion trips to the West Coast Sounds, run by the U.S.S. Coy. up to 1910, was advocated at the monthly meeting of the Southland League which was held last night, and it was decided to approach the company in the matter. The secretary (Mr J. S. Dick) submitted a report that at present the only way of reaching the Sounds was by arrangement with one of the Bluff boats, and making up a party for the trip. The U.S.S. Coy. excursions were popular, but since the wreck of the Waikare no boats had run, and the Sounds were not sufficiently known, simply because tourists could not reach them. He suggested that the League should take the matter up, and try and get the excursions re-established. The Chairman (Mr C. J. Brodrick) said that the idea was a good one, and should receive the support of the League. The excursions should prove popular, especially with the Exhibition coming at the end of the year. It was decided to forward a copy of the report to the U.S.S. Coy., together with a covering letter. In order that more assistance should be enlisted, it was also decided to send a copy of the report to the Minister in charge of the Tourist Department, the Otago League, the Canterbury League, and the Southland members of Parliament, asking their cooperation.
