GUN ELEVATION
THOMAS EDISON’S LATEST. "DRIVER” WANTED FOR NAVY. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright). NEW YORK, January 20. Mr Thomas Edison gave a few simple ideas for gun elevation on American battleships at little expense. He recommended the use of a Paravane, or sort of a lateral rudder or fin, by which a battleship could be tilted to alter the gun’s range much after the principle whereby submarines dive or rise to the surface. “A pound of mercury for each ship used with the apparatus will do the trick,” declared the famous inventor. The plan was submitted to Washington and rejected on the grounds that it would too seriously retard the ship’s motion. The inventor suggested, “The Navy needs a driver to make the personnel work.”
