SOUTHLAND LEAGUE

MONTHLY EXECUTIVE MEETING. SOUTHLAND PROVINCIAL BOUNDARY. The monthly meeting of the Executive of the Southland League was held last night, present: Mr C. J. Brodrick (chair), A. E. Lea, W. McChesney, H. B. Farnell, A. Bain, C. S. Longuet, S. Ritchie, J. S. Baxter. J. D. Trotter, J. A. Broom and C. Campbell. CORRESPONDENCE. The Minister of Labour, Hon. G. J. Anderson, wrote stating that he had advised Signor Filippo Sacchi, secretary to the Senator Albertino, and representative of the Corriere della Sera, Italy, who is studying the labour conditions of .New Zealand, to visit Southland before returning north. He had also given the visitor a letter of introduction to the secretary.—lt was decided to thank Mr Anderson for his letter, and to assist Signor Sacchi. The Minister of Tourist and Health resorts wrote asking for a further supply of Southland guide books. —It was decided to ask the Department for full particulars of the distribution of the previous supply before more copies were forwarded, as the supply was limited, and the League was anxious to conserve the remainder so that they would be distributed to the best advantage. The N.Z. Native Bird Society asked for the assistance of the League in its endeavour to obtain a board to supervise the protection of native birds and the sanctuaries. The League expressed its sympathy with the protection of native birds, and it was decided to ask for further information with regard to the establishment of the board suggested. LEAGUE CONFERENCE. The proposed conference of the South Island Progress Leagues was brought up by the Chairman, who said the matter was mentioned at the previous meeting. Letters were sent to the various Leagues and all sent in favourable replies, asking for a definite date for the conference. He suggested February 25 and 26, as good dates, as the Premier, Mr Massey, would probably be in Southland then. Mr C. Campbell said that it might be better to postpone the conference until Carnival week, which would probably be in April. This would also fit in with the opening of the Monowai scheme and the Ohai railway. It was decided to confer with the Southland A. and P. Association and the Carnival committee, and if a favourable reply were received from them the conference to be held in April. PROVINCIAL BOUNDARY. Mr C. S. Longuet said that Southland was included in the Otago Motor registration district, and he advocated that the League should again try and get the Southland province re-established. He thought the League should try and get the old provincial boundaries gazetted again by law, and thus establish a separate Southland Provincial district. If they asked for that, they would probably get the province reestablished. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr C. S. Longuet, who agreed to furnish the old boundaries and a report on the procedure required to have the boundaries re-established. GENERAL. Mr A. Bain said he had seen a copy of an immigration nomination paper, and various ports were mentioned, but Bluff had been left out. Gisborne, Oamaru and Timaru were mentioned and these were not direct ports. The most southerly port was Port Chalmers. They should approach the Government and have Bluff included in the nomination paper. It was decided to approach the Government and also the Southland members of Parliament in an endeavour to have Bluff included as a port.
