BISHOP’S COURT

DESTROYED BY FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 25. Bishop’s Court was practically destroyed by fire early this morning. Archbishop Julius had not been residing there for some years, and until recently it had been utilised as a hostel. With his Grace’s coming retirement, a new hostel was secured, and Bishop’s Court was occupied by Rev Hubert Jones, pending the appointment and arrival of the new Bishop. When Rev. Jones retired at 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday, everything was secure, but an hour later the smell of smoke awoke him, and an investigation revealed that the fire had broken out in the roof of the chapel. The Brigade was summoned, but ere it arrived the fire had obtained a good hold of the building, an old wooden one of two storeys, with a shingle roof, and it was well over an hour before the flames were under control. The fire also spread to the newer portion of brick and slate, the roof being considerably damaged. The interior suffered to less extent.
