HOSPITAL SATURDAY

THE SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED. Following is the 17th annual report of the Southland Hospital Saturday Association to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday evening:— The annual collection was taken up on December 8 and resulted in the sum of £448 4/3 being collected, which is considered satisfactory. The weather conditions on that occasion were not too congenial, being overcast and cold, and had the effect of keeping many people out of town, which deprived town workers of better returns. It is also to be noted the Hospital nurses did not appear in uniform on account of the boisterous weather, which, by the way, is the first occasion since the inauguration of the Association. It is to be hoped, however, the nursing staff will be well represented in their uniforms at the next annual appeal. It might be mentioned the appearance of the nurses in uniforms makes a huge difference to the collection. The country returns were not up to the previous year. It is to be hoped the country districts will still continue to assist in the work of the Association, which is always appreciated by the Committee. The Committee cannot adequately express their gratitude to those ladies and gentlemen who rendered such valuable assistance —the principals iii arranging the general work of their stations and to the assistants for the time and untiring energy displayed in the work of collecting. The Committee sincerely trusts the principals of stations and assistants will long continue to assist in the work of an Association that has done laudable work in the district. The Association wish to thank the business houses who kindly placed motor cars at the disposal of the Committee on the day of the collection, and our thanks are also due for many donations received. The management of the Albion Picture Company assisted by giving a matinee, and our thanks are due to them for their continued support. The Civic Company have promised a matinee, which is to be given shortly. The collection taken up by the schools amounted to £l2 13/10, an increase on the previous year of £3 10/-, and your Committee are highly pleased at this response. As in past years the local and country newspapers again rendered assistance through the medium of their respective papers and for this support we offer our thanks. The balance-sheet has been duly audited and shows clearly how the money has been spent, and the following are the allocations: —Southland Hospital, 30 per cent; District Nurse, 10 per cent; Prisoners and Patients’ Aid Society, 5 per cent; Sixpenny Clothing Club, 10 per cent; Plunket Nurse, 12J per cent; St. John’s Ambulance, 12£ per cent; Bluff Sailors’ Rest, 5 per cent; Children’s House Committee, 5 per cent; Victoria Home, 10 per cent. Your Committee have pleasure in intimating the working expenses of the Association have been reduced by £9 1/3 from those of last year. It is worthy of note that the expenses have not been so low for the last six or seven years. The residents at Stewart Island collected the sum of £ll 10/6, which was allocated to the Stewart Island Nurse Committee. In conclusion, the Committee are convinced that the Association is doing good work and the collection does not press unduly upon any section of the community, as the individual amounts given are small The Association desire to express their' appreciation and know they have the hearty goodwill of the community. We trust that continued support and interest will be taken in the work of the Association for the incoming year. The balance-sheet shows that the distribution made last year was as follows: Southland Hospital, £ll2 10/-; District Nurse, £37 10/-; Prisoners’ and Patients’ Aid Society, £lB 15/-; Sixpenny Clothing Club, £37 10/-; Plunket Nurse, £46 17/6; St. John’s Ambulance, £46 17/6; Bluff Sailors’ Rest, £lB 15/-; Children’s House Committee, £lB 15/-; Victoria Home, £37 10/-; Stewart Island Nurse. £ll 10/6.
